| Résumé : |
level2:Billy Budd is a story about a young, handsome, and innocent sailor named Billy Budd, who is loved by everyone on the ship HMS Bellipotent. He is cheerful, honest, and kind, but also naïve and unable to understand evil in others.
The ship’s master-at-arms, John Claggart, becomes jealous of Billy’s goodness and popularity. Out of envy, Claggart falsely accuses Billy of planning a mutiny. When Captain Edward Vere confronts Billy with the accusation, Billy becomes so shocked and unable to speak that he accidentally strikes Claggart, killing him instantly. Captain Vere believes Billy is good at heart but feels bound by naval law, which demands punishment for killing a superior officer. Though it pains him deeply, Vere insists that Billy must be executed to maintain discipline. Billy accepts his fate calmly and forgives everyone before he is hanged. His death leaves a deep impression on the crew, and he is remembered as a symbol of innocence and goodness destroyed by a rigid system. |
